Management of the community

The app highlights the value of the Sicomoro Foundation and facilitates the management of the community, by identifying its members, promoting communications between them and the institution, and giving access to the following services:

• Registration and access to courses and events of the Sicomoro Foundation
• Participation in open or personalized debate groups of the community
• News from the foundation
• Payment of the donation and access to the associated certificate
• Suggestions to the institution
• Identification card, with blockchain token and QR code.

The app uses blockchain, innovative technology that guarantees the inviolability of information through smart contracts, managed in a network programmed by a voting algorithm. The information uses the Verifiable Credentials and European Self-Sovereign Identity Framework (ESSIF) standards of the European Commission, through its European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) initiative, the adoption of which will allow the use of digital identity on other platforms and interoperation with other European institutions. It highlights the self-sovereign nature of digital identity, which blockchain allows, in which the user owns and manages their data.

 

SmartDegrees, in addition to developing the app, operates it and registers the digital identity on its own blockchain platform (Quorum, the enterprise evolution of Ethereum), as well as on the public permissioned blockchain platform Alastria, to provide transparency and also interoperability with other platforms.

Sicomoro Foundation

Seal of Excellence of the European Commission

This collaboration culminates a 2019 year of full growth for SmartDegrees, in which the European Commission has provided it with its Seal of Excellence (Horizon 2020 quality certificate – the largest research and innovation program in the European Union – in compliance with its criteria of excellence, impact, quality and efficiency in the implementation), in addition to granting financing to accelerate its expansion. The company anticipates in this way a technology that will become essential in the medium term.

SmartDegrees also already collaborates fluently with the following institutions:

• University of the Illes Balears. Agreement signed with the objective of carrying out joint research studies on blockchain technology, to expand its possibilities in academic degrees, anticipate future trends and boost its communication to other universities.
• Master in Banking and Financial Markets in Casablanca. A joint initiative between the universities Hassan II of Casablanca and Cantabria, which since August already issues its first university diplomas in blockchain, registered and certified by SmartDegrees.
• Sicomoro Foundation. It has its meetings minutes certified in blockchain, simplifying and guaranteeing its processes, through an innovative end-to-end solution provided by SmartDegrees, since December.

Microsoft for Startups initiative

This innovative and disruptive model has not gone unnoticed and has obtained adherance to Microsoft for Startups initiative, consolidating its university certification platform, by hosting the blockchain nodes in the Azure cloud, improving security and scalability, in addition to multiple advantages for its expansion, for the benefit of universities.

In addition and in order to complement the above, SmartDegrees has expanded its services, incorporating a business strategic consulting activity, which it develops through SmartDegrees Consulting.

SmartDegrees began providing its services for the registration and certification of blockchain degrees at the University Carlos III de Madrid, in July 2018, to help university graduates in the labor market, promoting services around the degree and guaranteeing the validity of diplomas.

The Sicomoro Foundation believes that this form of certification provides security, rigor and traceability in this key process of every foundation. To this end, SmartDegrees has adapted its academic degree certification solution to the complete certification of the associated processes in foundation meetings. The Sicomoro Foundation is the first to use the advantages of blockchain to support its meetings.

The process begins with the certification of the members of the board of trustees, the sending of the meeting notice by its secretary, confirmation of attendance or delegation of vote by the members, sending of associated documentation by its secretary and ends with the certification in blockchain of the approval of the minutes and its final documentation.

SmartDegrees certifies academic degrees or any other type of property using blockchain technology in a cryptocurrency-free version. This technology ensures that what is certified, in this case the complete process of the board meeting, and especially the documentation and minutes, are approved and stored in an unalterable way, through the smart contracts. The record is made on its own blockchain platform (Quorum, Ethereum‘s evolution for business), as well as on the public permissioned blockchain platform Alastria, to provide transparency and also interoperability with other platforms.
